REMUSE was founded by New York born designer and stylist Tamara Leacock of Bahamian, Brazilian and Kittitian heritage.
Tamara is a designer and stylist who works with recycled materials, artisan techniques, and Afro-futurist aesthetics. As a designer, she integrates natural and recycled materials into shapes that are androgynous, often free size, and a fluid exploration of natural colour and mood.
Tamara has trained in patternmaking, draping, and construction at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Paris American Academy and received a dual Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in Latin American Studies and International Studies. She further went on to pursue a Masters of Arts in Individualized Study at New York University focused on fashion as a vehicle for social justice.
After working in the commercial fashion industry as an assistant stylist for film, television, NYFW and a number of international fashion and lifestyle publications, Tamara has since relocated to Narrm (Melbourne) to launch her label in connection with the lands she now calls home. She is currently a lecturer in the Fashion and Sustainability degree program at Collarts.
A firm believer in diversity in the fashion industry in front and behind the scenes, she continues to create garments and curate events that align with ethical principles from the lens of supporting people, animals, and the environment.
The Story behind the Label and REMUSE Brand
REMUSE is a wearable art practice rooted in resilience and reimagining new futures for adornment for contemporary bodies.
The Melbourne based clothing label where futurism meets nature. Fusing artisan techniques, low-impact dye technology, and natural fibres, REMUSE investigates the ways the future of a fashion is simply fashion that takes inspiration from the earth.
The philosophy behind the label is to create small, ethically produced, trans-seasonal collections, released quarterly at the time of each Equinox and each Solstice. Each collection gives REMUSE an opportunity to reconsider its impact and material choices.
The name "REMUSE" was conceptualised in 2015 from the idea of reclaiming one's inner musedom.. REMUSE is synonymous with reclaiming one's power, personal genius and inner zeitgeist back. We all have access to the creative genius.
